The Love Courier

Where scent becomes a message of love.

Overview

The Love Courier reimagines a perfume sample as a personal message rather than a disposable promotional item. Designed for a Valentine’s Day release, the concept transforms the fragrance into something intimate and sentimental—like a letter delivered to someone special. Inspired by the romantic heritage of the Italian brand Arrogance, the packaging emphasizes nostalgia, elegance, and the timeless act of sending love.

This concept was developed as part of a two-week academic design exercise exploring how storytelling and symbolism can transform promotional packaging into a meaningful emotional experience.

Research Insight – Getting The Feeling Right

Problem

his project explored how a fragrance sample could communicate raw emotion and narrative through design. The challenge was to translate a romantic story into a very small and simple packaging format while still creating a memorable and symbolic experience for the viewer.

How can love be carried through design?

Solution

The solution focused on using symbolism to communicate the story. Research into romantic imagery and historical forms of communication led to the pigeon, a symbol of love and message delivery. By shaping the packaging like a white pigeon that holds the perfume sample, the fragrance becomes a symbolic message of love being carried and delivered, turning the sample into an emotional experience rather than a simple promotional item

The Concept

The package is shaped like a white pigeon, a symbol historically associated with love, trust, and the delivery of messages. The pigeon’s wings and wrap cradle the perfume bottle, visually reinforcing the idea of the fragrance being carried and protected on its journey. In this design, the sample becomes the message itself—an object meant to be received, opened, and experienced as a gesture of affection.

Colour Palette

The colour palette remains mostly minimal, with the pigeon rendered in white to symbolize purity and sincerity. Subtle accents appear in the heart and beak, adding warmth without overwhelming the form.

Typography

I chose Baskerville for the typography because of its timeless elegance and connection to traditional print. Often associated with classic literature and letterpress printing, the typeface evokes the feeling of love letters and handwritten correspondence.

Mood Board

Sketches

The mockup embraces a loose, sketch-like three-dimensional style inspired by handwritten letters and traditional drawing.

This hand-rendered quality gives the packaging a romantic and nostalgic feeling, referencing older forms of communication where messages were written and delivered with care. The imperfect, illustrative aesthetic helps the design feel personal and timeless.

Design Challenges

Problem 1: Portraying the Pigeon Elegantly

One design challenge was determining how to portray the pigeon in a way that felt romantic and symbolic rather than literal or distracting. Because pigeons are not typically associated with elegance, it was important to find a visual approach that would still feel refined and meaningful.

Solution

The solution was to simplify the form and focus on symbolism rather than realism. By using a clean, minimal silhouette and soft sculptural shapes, the pigeon becomes a poetic messenger of love rather than a literal bird, helping the concept feel elegant and intentional.

Problem 2: Balancing Beauty and Usability

Another challenge was balancing storytelling with functionality. Since perfume samples are small promotional items meant to be quickly recognized and picked up, the design needed to communicate the concept without becoming overly complex.

Solution

To solve this, the packaging was kept entirely white with minimal accents. This allows the design to remain clean and easy to recognize as a fragrance sample, while the form of the pigeon carries the emotional narrative of the concept.

Outcome

This project became as much a journey in storytelling as it was a design exercise. It taught me how to balance symbolism, functionality, and emotion, and how small details can carry big meaning.

More than anything, it reminded me why I love design: its ability to make even a tiny object feel timeless, personal, and full of emotion. Knowing that this package captures the essence of the perfume—elegant, enduring, and meant to last forever—made it feel complete.
